In Memoriam: Allan D. Boardman,

Allan Boardman, OSA Fellow and Emeritus member, passed away on 24 November 2018. Boardman was elected an OSA Fellow in 2006 for seminal contributions to nonlinear wave phenomena including surface polaritons, nonlinear guided waves, solitons and magneto-optics, and exemplary leadership and service to the optics community.
Boardman was a Professorial Research Fellow at the School of Computing, Science, and Engineering, University of Salford, Manchester, UK. He was a faculty member at the Salford Innovation Research Centre (SIRC). He was internationally known for his work as a theorist and numerical analyst in magneto-optics and metamaterials. Boardman received his PhD from the University of Durham, UK. Boardman was an active OSA volunteer having served as a member of the Max Born Award Committee (2009-2010), Editor of JOSA B (2004-2010), and member of the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Committee (2012-2015). He was also a member of four OSA Technical Groups including, Optics for Energy, Nonlinear Optics, Nanophotonics, and Photonic Metamaterials.
Boardman was a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK), Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (UK), SPIE, and OSA. Other leadership positions included serving as Chair of the Optics and Photonics Division of the Institute of Physics and as Vice-President of the UK Consortium for Optics and Photonics. Boardman was also a member of the European Physical Society, where he served as a Board member of the Quantum Electronics and Optics Division.
During this career, Boardman presented more than 300 conference papers and was the author or editor of seven books, served as a member of the editorial advisory board of the journal Nonlinear Optics and editor of Advances in Nonlinear Optics. He was appointed Topical Editor for Metamaterials and Photonic Structures for the UK Institute of Physics Journal of Optics (2008-2010).
Allan Boardman will be dearly missed by his family and colleagues. OSA and the scientific community mourns the loss of Allan Boardman.
