Statement by OSA CEO Elizabeth Rogan on Violent Attack on U.S. Capitol

The Optical Society (OSA) condemns the lawless actions to disrupt the constitutionally mandated certification of the electoral ballots at the U.S. Capitol. The violent attack on this venerated institution is a tragedy which leaves a historical stain on U.S. democracy. As an organization that respects and beholds the U.S. Constitution and the orderly transfer of power, we are saddened by the deep divisions within the U.S. political system which have led to these unnecessary, deadly consequences.

We call on U.S. elected officials to exhibit the type of leadership that will help us to heal and unite the country, and prevent the re-occurrence of similar attacks. OSA strives to create environments where differences of opinion are acknowledged and valued through civil discourse and lawful engagement. The Society looks forward to working with the Biden-Harris administration and new U.S. Congress.
