New Quantum 2.0 Conference to Showcase Advances in Science and Technology
OSA conference will explore the latest frontiers and innovations in quantum research
WASHINGTON – The latest advances in quantum information science and technology and their impact on research and commercial development will be the focus of the new Quantum 2.0 conference sponsored by The Optical Society.
The Quantum 2.0 conference – to be held 15-18 June 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Virginia, U.S.A – will include high-impact keynote and plenary talks, and more specialized invited talks by world leaders in quantum technology and research. It will engage scientists, engineers and others working to advance, for example, quantum computing and simulation, quantum communications, and quantum sensing for future scientific discoveries and commercial applications in the global marketplace.
“The conference will bring together researchers from universities, industry and government labs to stimulate the development of practical quantum technologies,” said conference co-chair Michael Raymer of the University of Oregon, USA. “It also will address what the community sees as grand challenges for building the needed quantum science and technology infrastructure.”

The OSA began organizing the Quantum 2.0 conference in response to the U.S. National Quantum Initiative (NQI) and similar initiatives worldwide. The conference is also meant to showcase the unique role that optics and photonics will play in maximizing the impact of these global investments.
“Photonics are a common denominator of most quantum technology, especially as they scale into the future,” said conference co-chair Christopher Monroe of the University of Maryland, U.S.A. “This conference is needed to highlight quantum information science and technology from an optics point of view. This is critical since science and engineering must be able to work together across academia and industry, as prescribed in the NQI.”
“In the next several years, many countries around the world will be allocating a great deal of resources to quantum technologies,” said conference co-chair Ronald Holzwarth of Menlo Systems, Martinsried, Germany. “Researchers and entrepreneurs have promised a lot in the way of quantum innovations, and now the community is working to deliver.”
Speakers and Programming
The current list of keynote speakers includes Marissa Giustina, a senior research scientist and quantum electronics engineer in the Google AI Quantum hardware team, Santa Barbara, California, U.S.A.; Mikhail Lukin, co-director of the Harvard Quantum Initiative in Science and Engineering and co-director of the Harvard-MIT Center for Ultracold Atoms in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A.; and Gregoire Ribordy, co-founder and CEO of ID Quantique, Genève, Switzerland.
Key research topics to be covered at the meeting include quantum computing and simulation, quantum communication systems, metrology and sensing, quantum interconnects and many more forefront areas.
In coordination with the conference, OSA will also host a student and early career professional development and networking session, which will provide a unique opportunity for those who are close to finishing or who have recently completed their doctorate degree to interact with experienced researchers.

The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Reston, which is the largest hotel near Dulles International Airport. It is adjacent to the shops, dining and entertainment venues at Reston Town Center.
