Awardee and finalists presented their research at OFC: The Optical Networking and Communication Conference & Exhibition
SAN DIEGO--The OSA Foundation (OSAF) and Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced the Grand Prize winner for the 2019 Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition. Ryota Tanomura, University of Tokyo, Japan, received $1,500 and presented his paper at OFC: The Optical Networking and Communication Conference & Exhibition (OFC), 3 March 2019 in San Diego, Calif., U.S.A.

Tanomura’s paper is entitled “Integrated reconfigurable 4x4 optical unitary converter using multiport directional couplers.” Two Honorable Mention awardees, Duanni Huang, University of California, Santa Barbara, U.S.A., and Xuwei Xue, TU/e, Netherlands, each received $1,000.
Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition prizewinners are undergraduate or graduate students from qualifying institutions. All finalists presented their papers at the OFC conference.
“Supporting the next generation of leaders in the optics and photonics community is central to The OSA Foundation mission,” said Executive Director Chad Stark. “Since 2007, our collaboration with Corning Incorporated to present the Outstanding Student Paper awards has helped to highlight that commitment.”
The 2019 Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition finalists are:
Jiale He, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, presenting “Demonstration of high precision 3-D indoor positioning system based on two-layer ANN machine learning technique”
Duanni Huang, University of California, Santa Barbara, U.S.A., presenting “Sub-kHz linewidth extended-DBR lasers heterogeneously integrated on silicon”
Haolin Li, University Ghent-imec, Belgium, presenting “Real-time 100-GS/s Sigma-Delta all-digital radio-over-fiber transmitter for 22.75-27.5 GHz Band”
Daniela Moniz, Coriant Portugal, presenting “Service provisioning framework with dynamic margin management for Optical Transport Networks”
Xuwei Xue, TU/e, Netherlands, presenting “Experimental Assessment of SDN-enabled reconfigurable OPSquare data center networks with QoS guarantees”
Jiao Zhang, Fudan University, China, presenting “200-Gb/s/l PDM-PAM-4 PON with 29-dB power budget based on heterodyne coherent detection”
