Plenary Speakers to Highlight Latest Advances in Optical-Based Sensors at OSA Sensing Congress

Melba Crawford, Alex Gaeta and Peter Russo will give a variety of perspectives on evolving field

 

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Plenary talks on the latest optical-based sensor advances are among the highlights of the OSA Optical Sensors and Sensing Congress 25–27 June in San Jose, Calif., U.S.A. The new Congress is collocated with the Sensors Expo & Conference, the largest gathering of engineers and engineering professionals involved in sensors and sensing-related technologies.

Melba Crawford, associate dean for engineering and research at Purdue University, U.S.A., will discuss opportunities and challenges associated with acquisition, processing and analysis of high resolution RGB, visible near infrared and shortwave infrared hyperspectral data and discrete return LiDAR data from unmanned aerial vehicles for plant breeding experiments focused on sorghum for biofuels. She will also present results from multi-modality, multi-temporal predictive modeling of complex phenotypes such as biomass using data driven machine learning and biophysical models in the context of feature extraction and learning with limited training data.

Alex Gaeta, professor of applied physics and applied mathematics at Columbia University, U.S.A., will discuss his work on chip-based comb spectroscopy. He will describe how the ability to generate optical frequency combs in microresonators at milliwatt power levels offers the promise for high-precision spectroscopic instruments in highly robust, compact and portable platforms.

Peter Russo, director of LiDAR at Analog Photonics, will describe how integrated optical phased arrays provide an attractive solution to LiDAR sensors by enabling solid-state, small-form-factor systems fabricated on 300 mm wafers. He will present recent results including high-performance beam steering and long-range LiDAR up to almost 200m.

What: 2019 OSA Optical Sensors and Sensing Congress Plenary Session

When: 25 June 2019, 8:00 – 10:00 am (PT); 26 June 2019, 8:00 – 9:00 am (PT)

Where: San Jose McEnery Convention Center, Calif., U.S.A.

The Congress will provide a forum for presenting both the technical and applications sides of sensors, bring together major sensor developers and users and provide a showcase for the latest sensor prototypes and products. The Congress is comprised of four topical meetings: Fourier Transform Spectroscopy, Hyperspectral Imaging and Sounding of the Environment, Optical Sensors and Optics and Photonics for Sensing the Environment.
