OSA Members Named Recipients of U.S. Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers
Four Members, two Senior Members of The Optical Society are among 2019 class of STEM professionals recognized for exceptional promise in science and technology leadership
WASHINGTON—Six members of The Optical Society (OSA) have been named recipients of the prestigious 2019 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government to early career scientists and engineers. The awardees, who are at the start of their independent research careers, also show exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology.
More broadly, the PECASE Award, established in 1996, acknowledges the contributions scientists and engineers make to the advancement of STEM and to community service as demonstrated through scientific leadership, public education and community outreach. The awards are administered by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy along with participating U.S. government agencies.
The OSA Member/2019 PECASE Honorees are:

- Spencer L. Smith, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Co-Director UCSB Brain Initiative, University of California, Santa Barbara, U.S.A.
- Volker Jendrick Sorger (OSA Senior Member), Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, George Washington University, U.S.A.
- Gordon Wetzstein, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University, U.S.A.
