The Optical Society Names the 2018 Stephen D. Fantone Distinguished Service Award Recipient
WASHINGTON—The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to name Bob Jopson, Nokia Bell Laboratories, USA, the 2018 Stephen D. Fantone Distinguished Service Award recipient. Jopson is recognized for 25 years of enthusiastic service, principled leadership and tenacious commitment to OSA's publications, conferences and its membership.
The Fantone Distinguished Service Award is presented to individuals who, over an extended period of time, have served The Optical Society in an outstanding way, especially through volunteer participation in its management, operation or planning in such ways as editorship of a periodical, organization of meetings, or other service to the Society. The award was established in 1973 by the Board of Directors and in 2013 was named in honor of Stephen D. Fantone, who served as OSA Treasurer from 1996 to 2013.
"Dr. Jopson’s volunteer efforts have had a profound impact on the Society over the years, as he tirelessly worked to improve whatever program he was supporting. His long history of service to OSA, includes the Publications Council, OPN Editorial Advisory Committee, Publications Long Term Planning Group and the Library Advisory Committee,” said Ian Walmsley, 2018 President of The Optical Society and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Hooke Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Oxford, UK. “On behalf of OSA, we thank him for his commitment.”
Award Selection Committee Chair, Todd D. Krauss, University of Rochester, USA, added “Dr. Jopson has been an active program committee member for OFC, CLEO, FiO and OSA Topical Meetings. Additionally, he has been an editor of the Journal of Optical Networking, a technical group leader and a member of the Executive Committee of the Science & Engineering Council. All of these contributions combined, made Dr. Jopson an outstanding choice for our committee.”
Bob Jopson received a B.S. degree in physics from the University of California, Davis and a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University. He joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1981 and has continued with Bell Laboratories under various corporate owners until the present day.
