CLEO: 2014 Expects Highest Attendance in Five Years as the Technical Program Expands Engineering Focus

WASHINGTON, June 5, 2014—The organizers of CLEO: 2014, taking place June 8-13 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, California, USA, today announced they are seeing a boost in numbers heading into the event next week. The long-running laser conference and exposition is expecting the highest number of attendees in five years. Paper submissions this year were also up drastically—to their highest level ever—at more than 2,600.

“We’re very excited about the momentum going into CLEO next week,” said CLEO: 2014 General Co-Chair Iain McKinnie of Lockheed Martin Laser & Sensor Systems. “CLEO is designed to be a one-stop-shop where attendees can learn about early research results in one session and the latest commercial trends in another. The quality of the peer-reviewed technical program coupled with the industry leaders on the show floor make this event a must-attend for the entire laser community.”

Recognizing Optical Engineering Excellence

Organizers also announced CLEO will expand its paper submission acceptance criteria next year to include specific engineering topics as a way to increase its program offerings to the industrial segment of the optics and photonics community. The new criteria are part of one of three conference tracks known as CLEO: Applications & Technology, which features presentations on applied optics and photonics developments and how these technologies can be used in market applications.

Under the same high-quality review process as the rest of the CLEO conference papers, submissions that include commercial engineering topics and work that displays engineering progress of maturing and implemented photonics technologies can be accepted beginning in August of this year for next year’s conference.

“The addition of engineering topics to the CLEO acceptance criteria is another step in a series of actions taken by the CLEO Conference in recent years to grow its industry-focused programming,” said Wilhelm Kaenders, president of TOPTICA and chair of the CLEO Joint Council on Applications. “Expanding these parameters to highlight engineering excellence will not only increase the quality of the technical program at CLEO, but will also bring in new audiences, especially into the exhibit hall.”

Specifically, the CLEO: 2015 submission acceptance criteria will be expanded to include:

1. Commercial engineering papers in topic areas such as:

a. Biomedical applications
b. Industrial applications
c. Photonics instrumentation and techniques for metrology and industrial processes
d. Lasers and photonics applications for energy and the environment

2. Work that displays engineering progress of maturing and implemented photonics technologies represented through:

a. New photonics-based products
b. Field demonstrations of optical technology
c. Engineering of optical technologies

The call for papers for CLEO: 2015 opens in August 2014. For more information visit: www.CLEOConference.org/AT15WantsEngineers.

About CLEO
With a distinguished history as the industry's leading event on laser science, the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) is the premier international forum for scientific and technical optics, uniting the fields of lasers and opto-electronics by bringing together all aspects of laser technology, from basic research to industry applications. CLEO: Expo showcases the latest products and applications from more than 300 participating companies from around the world, providing hands-on demonstrations of the latest market innovations and applications. The Expo also offers valuable on-floor programming, including Market Focus and the Technology Transfer program.

Managed by The Optical Society (OSA) and sponsored by the American Physical Society's (APS) Laser Science Division, IEEE Photonics Society and OSA, CLEO provides the full range of critical developments in the field, showcasing the most significant milestones from laboratory to marketplace. With an unparalleled breadth and depth of coverage, CLEO connects all of the critical vertical markets in lasers and electro-optics. For more information, visit the event website at www.cleoconference.org. CLEO: 2014 takes place June 8 - 13 at the San Jose Convention Center.
