Anne Matsuura Joins the Optical Society as Senior Science Advisor
WASHINGTON, Nov. 5, 2012– The Optical Society (OSA) announced today that Anne Matsuura will join their staff as
a senior science advisor. In this role, Matsuura will assist with scientific and technical aspects of OSA’s programs and services, strategic development of global relationships, plus serve as an international and national government policy advisor for OSA.
“We are delighted to have Anne join the OSA team,” said OSA CEO Elizabeth Rogan. “She brings a diverse background of experience working in industry, academia, and government. Her connection within the global photonics community adds a valuable resource for our members, customers, and the broader optics community”.
Matsuura brings 20-plus years of physics experience to OSA. In her previous position as chief executive at the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF) in Belgium, Matsuura managed more than 200 scientists throughout Europe to provide scientific collaborations, training, and open-source software to further the understanding of the properties of materials, chemicals, and biological processes for technology applications across both the public and private sectors. Matsuura has also served as an adjunct professor in the physics department at Boston University since 2004. Before joining ETSF, Matsuura held positions as senior scientist, BIO/NANO/CHEM Group at In-Q-Tel, as program manager for atomic physics at the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and as special assistant to the U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Laboratories and Basic Science. She has also worked in the physics departments at Lund University in Sweden and Stanford University, and in the chemistry departments at the University of Tokyo and Nagoya University in Japan.
Matsuura received a Fulbright Scholarship to Nagoya University, Japan in 1991 and graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in physics and mathematics from Vanderbilt University. She received her Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University in 1998. In 2004, Matsuura received the Office of the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence.
