Corning Outstanding Student Paper Winner Announced
WASHINGTON, April 22—The OSA Foundation and Corning Incorporated are pleased to announce that this year’s winner of the Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition is David Hillerkuss of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. Hillerkuss was awarded top honors for his paper “Novel Optical Fast Fourier Transform Scheme Enabling Real-Time OFDM Processing at 392 Gbit/s and Beyond.” The $1,500 grand prize and two $1,000 honorable mention prizes were formally presented during the Plenary and Awards Session at this year’s Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) held March 21-25 in San Diego.
Hillerkuss was one of five finalists for the Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition that were selected from more than 430 student paper submissions. The finalists each presented their research at OFC/NFOEC and were judged by the conference general chairs and technical program chairs based on innovation, research excellence and author presentation skills.
“We are honored to present this year’s award to David Hillerkuss,” said John Cartledge of Queen’s University and one of this year’s OFC/NFOEC general co-chairs. “David’s research exhibited a remarkable level of innovation and his presentation of the results was superb. I anticipate that he will continue to make significant contributions to the field as he completes his doctoral studies. Congratulations to David and the two honorable mention awardees.”

Submissions for the 2011 Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition will be accepted during the 2011 OFC/NFOEC Call for Papers process.
