Meeting the Needs of Our Global Community

Our Response to COVID-19

Dear OSA Member:

Elizabeth A. Rogan, OSA CEOOSA’s core value of inclusivity is at the forefront of our activities as we continue to present virtual conferences and events to you during the covid-19 pandemic. This year, we have launched, at no cost to registrants, online meetings and webinars with live and pre-recorded presentations—and have found that thousands of individuals worldwide are willing and able to participate. This experience has shown that we can deliver high-quality content and services in remote real-time formats to ensure that you, our member, remains connected.

As part of the We Are On engagement initiative, OSA is offering free virtual content on a broad range of topics from hyperspectral imaging to broadband and multifunctional flat optics to professional development. And we have implemented measures to ensure the publishing process moves as efficiently and smoothly as possible during the pandemic. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of staff and volunteer leadership, we are much more nimble and forward-looking in times of change.

We are excited to share that over 8,500 registrants from 95 countries joined us for the all-virtual co-located OSA Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science APS/DLS (FiO + LS) and OSA Quantum 2.0 Conferences, 14 – 17 September. Technical presentations featured the latest innovations in quantum technologies and Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR/VR). Registrants will have access to recordings for on-demand viewing for 60 days. The Luminate Finals Competition energized opening day of FiO + LS with presentations from ten startups seeking funding to further develop their products. SunDensity, a company that uses optics based solutions to enhance solar power, was the top winner and recipient of US$1 million. Watch the program here.

Technologies enabled by optics and photonics are currently addressing the many challenges associated with the pandemic. Lasers are testing the effectiveness of facemasks and ultraviolet light is being used to sterilize personal protection equipment. Optics have also enabled the digital platforms that allow us to remain engaged and informed. In the coming weeks, OSA will continue to leverage these technologies to offer free technical content and serve the needs of our global community.

Yours Respectfully,

Elizabeth Rogan, OSA CEO
