  • OSA 2030 Green Paper

A vision for future of optics and photonics research, collaboration, education, and advocacy into 2030 and beyond

“One hundred years ago, the idea of an optical society was a pioneering one. OSA continues to fulfill its role as a visionary force in optics and photonics for its members and the world at large. In the years ahead, OSA will continue to adapt to our fast-changing world and to the phenomenal growth the organization continues to experience--from 6,050 members when I first joined in 1973 to a stunning 20,000-plus worldwide today.”
Stephen D. Fantone, 2020 OSA President

The Optical Society in 2030

Through a series of engagement activities led by 2018 OSA President Ian Walmsley, members, volunteer leaders and staff worked collaboratively to develop a vision of how OSA will frame the future of optics and photonics research, collaboration, education, and advocacy into 2030 and beyond.

The OSA 2030 Green Paper outlines the vision for the Society and while this document provides an overview of the collective thinking of a range of Society members and volunteers, it is only a beginning. OSA’s greatest strength is its member-driven collaboration, and the Board encourages each Society member to add his or her own insights and opinions to the conversation. Please join the OSA Board of Directors’ challenge to frame OSA’s future for 2030 and beyond.
