Fabrication, Design and Instrumentation Division

Overview

This division incorporates numerous disciplines in the design of optical components and systems, and the development of instrumentation to characterize the performance of optical components, subsystems and systems. The development and testing of numerous passive optical components such as lens, thin films, waveguide, etc. are of interest to this group. As these components are assembled into subsystems such as telescopes, microscopes, cameras, etc., this division develops the techniques to accurately measure their performance as well as determining standardized approaches to these measurements. The use of lasers to weld or modify materials for applications such as manufacturing will be studied by this division. Component modeling for lens, optical subsystem (telescope etc.), and fiber structures optimized for impairment mediation, and the fabrication techniques and technology to manufacture optical components and subsystems will be within the purview of this group. Evolving special optical technologies such as x-ray, holographic and diffractive optics are also covered within this group.

Technical Groups

Fiber Modeling and Fabrication (FF)

This group covers modeling and fabrication of optical fibers for applications including telecommunication, optical networking, sensing, and others.

Gamma, X-Ray and Extreme UV Optics (FX)

This group explores design, characterization, fabrication, and calibration of X-ray, gamma, and EUV optics (including multilayer optics) for applications in the fields of photolithography, synchrotron radiation, free-electron lasers, astronomy, and others.

Imaging Optical Design (FD)

This group encompasses the design and characterization of traditional optical systems utilizing lens design, geometric ray-tracing, and physical optics modeling. The evolution and development of design codes and software to assist in designing components and systems are included here. Typical applications include astronomical telescopes, microscopes, cameras, stray light, and adaptive optics.

Lasers in Manufacturing (FL)

This group discusses the technologies used in manufacturing applications that employ both CW and pulsed lasers for cutting, drilling, welding, ablation, polishing and cleaning processes.

NonImaging Optical Design (FN)

This group encompasses the design and characterization of illumination systems using modeling techniques. Non-sequential design techniques, including both software and tailoring methods provide the tools to design efficient optical components that provide the desired distribution at the target. Typical applications include solar energy, lighting, and displays.

Optical Fabrication and Testing (FM)

This group covers all aspects of optics fabrication and testing ranging from micro‐optics to large meter class optics; and from high‐value one‐of‐a‐kind optics to mass‐produced optics. It is also dedicated to the design, development, and use of metrology systems for the characterization of optics.

Polarization Management and Propagation (FP)

This group covers all aspects of polarization management and propagation in lightwave devices and systems, including theory, engineering, measurement, testing, and imaging. Additionally, applications of polarization, methods of modeling, and propagation will be included.

Systems and Instrumentation (FS)

This group takes a systems approach to integrate several disciplines into an instrument. The individual components can include aspects from the various division and technical groups of the OSA with the goal of achieving a desired function and performance. Additionally, thermal and vibrational effects, life cycle issues, and so forth are included in this group. Examples include spacecrafts, telescope systems, and commercial optics.

Thin Films (FT)

This group is concerned with the theoretical and experimental aspects of the design, preparation, and characterization of optical thin film materials and interference coatings.
