Interface and Defect-induced Scattering in Optical Coatings

Optical scattering plays a critical role in optical coatings. The light scattering properties of multilayer optical coatings are influenced by factors such as the nanostructural properties of all interfaces, local defects in the coating, and the optical factor that is related to field distribution in the coating. Most efforts have been devoted to develop polishing, cleaning, and deposition techniques to reduce surface roughness and then to minimize scattering levels in optical coatings.

In this webinar hosted by the OSA Thin Films Technical Group, Dr. Jinlong Zhang of Tongji University will present recent research progress concerning the interface scattering and defect-induced scattering. The approach to reduce the scattering of HR coatings with fully correlated interfacial roughness will be demonstrated. The theoretical and experimental development of HR coatings with suppressed backscattering towards the incident beam through oblique deposition will be presented. Numerical simulations will be performed to quantitatively assess defect-induced scattering in multilayer, and the deposition approach to reduce the defect-induced scattering will also be discussed.

About the Presenter: Jinlong Zhang, Tongji University

Jinlong Zhang holds PhD in Optical Engineering from Zhejiang University and MSc and BSc from Zhejiang University. He has 11 years of experience in design, simulation and deposition for high quality optical coatings. He was involved in development of high power laser coating and low-loss coatings. In addition to design and deposition of optical coatings, he has extensive experience with developing nanostructure thin films.
