OSA Laser Congress Plenary to Highlight Ultrafast Laser Systems and Black Hole Detection

NAGOYA, JAPAN — Sophisticated laser systems are increasingly being used for information gathering and sharing — satisfying many critical needs in sensing, free space optical (FSO) communications and advanced imaging of our galaxy. The OSA Laser Congress 2017 will feature the latest advancements in solid state laser developments and related technologies for use in free space laser communication, laser-based sensing and numerous industrial applications. The Congress will provide attendees with a comprehensive view of the latest technological advances as well as the applications of laser technologies for industrial products and markets.

Advanced Solid State Lasers for LIGO
On September 14, 2015 the two LIGO detectors nearly simultaneously detected gravitational wave signals from two merging black holes at more than one billion light years distance.  Numerical relativity models confirmed the waveform came from two black holes of 29 and 36 solar masses merged to create a final black hole with mass 62 and in the process of merging in less than 1/5 second radiated gravitational waves with more than 3 solar masses of energy. LIGO and Advanced LIGO requirements were met and enabled by advances in solid state lasers including a single frequency laser oscillator and quantum noise limited amplification. This presentation will look ahead to what will be needed by future solid state laser systems in order to detect collisions of black holes in the furthest galaxies.

High-Order Harmonics: Application and Prospects
Since the first observation of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) around 1987, almost thirty years have passed. Although there has been strong interest in related physical phenomena, many researchers expected that HHG would not be useful as a practical source at that time because of its small photon number associated with low conversion efficiency. Contrary to their expectations, however, HHG is now established as a high-output coherent light source in the XUV region and the sole source of attosecond pulses. The presentation will review recent efforts on generation of high harmonics and applications including ultrafast XUV science and EUV optics and mask inspection.
 
COLLOCATED MEETINGS
Lasers for Sensing & Free Space Communication (LS&C): Presentations will be given on the latest use of lasers in diverse fields such as quantum technologies, environmental sensing, remote imaging, close-in inspection, and medical diagnostics. LS&C seeks to merge enabling research with application needs. The meeting will especially highlight means by which quantum protocols can enhance the performance of applications such as remote sensing and free-space communication.

Advanced Solid State Lasers (ASSL): This meeting looks at new sources, advanced technologies, components and system design to improve the operation and application of solid state lasers. It covers the spectrum of solid state lasers from materials research to applied science and design innovations.

Laser Applications Conference & Executive Forum (LAC): Presentations given during this conference will focus on Materials Processing and High Intensity Laser Applications. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from industry leaders in the defense, scientific research, and energy markets. One of the themes of this meeting will be to initiate discussions on what engineering and production advances are needed to translate promising technological advances into marketable products.
