Books

OSA is no longer a "book publisher"; however, OSA actively publishes content from our meetings. OSA also co-publishes The Handbook of Optics with McGraw-Hill (see book info below), and is currently working with Wiley to copublish two book series.

OSA Conference Papers Available

Available through pay-per-view, as an individual subscription, or included in Optics InfoBase, OSA currently has more than 300 published proceedings/digests. These valuable conference papers chronicle some of OSA's global conferences, such as Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition and The National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), Conference on Laser and Electro-Optics, (CLEO). See the full list of available http://www.opticsinfobase.org/conferences.cfm.

McGraw Hill

Handbook of Optics

The most comprehensive and up-to-date optics resource available, The Handbook of Optics, Third Edition, is now out with all five volumes and available to OSA members for a discount. These cross-referenced volumescontain everything a student, scientist, or engineer requires to actively work in the field. Individual chapters are written by the world's most renowned experts who explain, illustrate, and solve the entire field of optics. Each volume contains a complete chapter listing for the entire Handbook, extensive chapter glossaries, and a wealth of references. This pioneering work offers unprecedented coverage of optics data, techniques, and applications. Available in print, as an eBook, and online.

Wiley

We are also pursuing 2 series with Wiley: 1) Optical Fiber Communications (Casimer DeCusatis, Editor - IBM) and Optical Sciences and Engineering (Vasudevan Lakshminarayanan, Editor - University of Waterloo).

Two books have already been copublished by OSA/Wiley:

http://www.osa.org/journals/news/QuantitativeImaging.jpgQuantitative Imaging Tools for Lung Cancer Drug Assessment, edited by OSA members James Mulshine and Thomas Baer (OSA's 2009 president).
This collection of articles highlights the most recent advanced techniques of drug-based methods of detecting lung cancer including 'state of the art' methods for using high resolution CT imaging to evaluate how lung tumors respond to specific drug therapies. The book grew out of a 2006 workshop co-sponsored by OSA and the Prevent Cancer Foundation. It consists of the proceedings of the workshop, representing manuscripts from many leading lung cancer clinical and medical research as well as imaging and image analysis groups. This book is particularly important addition to oncology research as lung cancer requires immediate intervention to promote patient survival. Imaging of tumors can quickly provide critical information which can be used to determine if a particular drug therapy is effective. However, current CT image analysis tools are still very crude, preventing accurate quantitative assessment of changes in a tumor's characteristics after drug therapy. The new imaging techniques will hopefully prove to be an improvement over current methods and lead to increased early detection and higher survival rates.

ATTENTION BOOK AUTHORS!

Potential authors are encouraged to contact OSA if you are interested in publishing under the new OSA/Wiley imprint. The benefits of publishing with OSA/Wiley are many, not least of which is being associated and promoted by two premier publishers. Wiley plans aggressive promotion of the books and there will be advertisements in OPN and books will be displayed at all OSA sponsored meetings and conferences. Also the books will be clearly identified within Wiley's catalogs and special mailings as joint publications.
Authors interested in submitting a manuscript to either series, contact Alan Tourtlotte, Associate Publisher, OSA atourt@osa.org. Book publishing is overseen by OSA's Special Publishing Activities Committee (SPAC).
