Pre-Conference Short Courses
Monday, 22 August, 14:00-18:00
All full conference attendees can choose to attend one short course on Monday, 22 August. Space is very limited and you must select your course during registration.
Tuesday, 23 August, 16:00-17:30
Poster presentations offer an effective way to communicate new research findings and provide a venue for lively and detailed discussions between presenters and interested viewers. Don’t miss this opportunity to discuss current research one-on-one with presenters.

Light the Future with Margaret Murnane
Join OSA as we celebrate our 100th anniversary
with the Light The Future speaker series featuring distinguished scientists, engineers and Nobel Laureates. At LAOP we will be joined by Margaret Murnane, professor of physics at University of Colorado, JILA Fellow and OSA Fellow. Below is information about her talk.
Science at the timescale of the electron: how extreme nonlinear optics revolutionized tabletop X-ray lasers
Ever since the invention of the laser over 55 years ago, scientists have been striving to create an x-ray version of the laser. Advances in extreme nonlinear optics now make it possible to efficiently upshift tabletop femtosecond lasers into the ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray regions of the spectrum, to wavelengths as short as 8Å. This unique high harmonic light source is ideally suited for host of applications in imaging and understanding how advanced materials function. A host of applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology have now been demonstrated, including full-field microscopes with record 14nm spatial resolution, quantifying how nanoscale energy flow differs from bulk, measuring how fast a material can change its electronic or magnetic state, and capturing the fastest motions of electrons in molecules and materials.
Wednesday, 24 August
Join your colleagues for a festive evening. The banquet is open to all full technical attendees. Conference attendees may purchase extra tickets in advance for their guest. This event will follow the Light the Future event.
Entrepreneurship in Colombia
Friday, 26 August
After the conference stay for this special 1/2 day session to learn about how photonic technology can be developed in Colombia. This session will answer these questions:
- Feasibility to create photonic industry in Colombia,
- In what photonic fields it would be possible,
- What is it needed to develop this type of industry and how attract investors?
- Main obstacles to be overcome
- Getting inputs for constructing a road map
- Suggestions to conform a work team to encourage this initiative.
This event is include in LAOP conference registration, but the item must be selected when completing registration.
Post Conference School on Ultrafast Optics
Andrew Weiner, Purdue University, USA
Friday, 26 August and Saturday 27 August
Edificio de Extensión- Universidad de Antioquia
This school presents an introduction on ultrafast optics. It will discuss some key concepts like linear optical and Third-order nonlinear processes, pulse shaping, measurement of ultrashort pulses, and linear and nonlinear processes in ultrashort pulse lasers. These topics will be discussed and illustrated with examplesfrom the Weiner's laboratory. It is open to all LAOP conference attendees, but this item must be selected during registration to secure your spot.
