OSA Mourns the Loss of John Walter Strohbehn
OSA Fellow John Walter Strohbehn, 70, died in Hanover, New Hampshire, on Feb. 22, 2007.
Strohbehn received his B.S, M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. In 1963, he began his teaching career at Dartmouth College as an assistant professor at the Thayer School of Engineering. He was the associate dean of the Thayer School from 1976-1981, and the Sherman Fairchild Professor of Engineering from 1983-1990. He was appointed provost of Dartmouth in 1987 and served in that role until 1993.
After relocating to Durham, N.C., he became provost of Duke University from 1994-1999. While at Duke, he continued teaching as a professor of biomedical engineering and civil and environmental engineering. In 2003, he retired as professor emeritus.
Strohbehn’s early research in engineering focused on radiophysics, while his later interests were on biomedical engineering, medical imaging and hyperthermia for cancer treatment. He authored more than 100 papers on electromagnetic wave propagation effects and the engineering aspects of hyperthermia.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, a sister, three children and five grandchildren.
