In Memoriam: Dr. Fumio Okano, 1952-2013
Dr. Fumio Ok
ano, a well-known pioneer and innovator in 3D displays, passed away on 26 November 2013 in Kanagawa, Japan, at the age of 61. Dr. Okano received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, in 1976, 1978, and 1996, respectively. He joined the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), Tokyo, in 1978. Since 1981, he had been engaged in research on high-definition television (HDTV) cameras, HDTV systems, 3D television, and ultrahigh-definition television systems at NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories. In 2011, he moved to NHK Engineering Systems, Inc., where he worked as Managing Director and Executive Research Engineer. Dr. Okano was an IEEE fellow and a member of OSA, SPIE, and the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers of Japan. Through a series of highly-cited experiments and publications, Dr. Okano and his colleagues at NHK rejuvenated the potential of integral photography as a viable approach for 3D displays. He made numerous innovations and refinements of integral photography 3D display systems, as evident from his publications in OSA, IEEE, and SPIE journals, which are frequently cited by researchers in the field. Dr. Okano’s leadership in this field shall be greatly missed and he shall be remembered for his enduring innovations and contributions in the field of 3D displays.
