New today in Optics Letters, researchers have devised an ultra-thin LCD screen that operates without a power source, making it a compact, energy-efficient way to display visual information.

OSA is pleased to announce that its members have elected Eric Mazur of Harvard University, USA, as its 2015 vice president.

OSA today announced that its annual meeting, Frontiers in Optics 2014, taking place next week in Tucson, Arizona, USA, will serve as the launch for its extensive educational outreach associated with the 2015 International Year of Light (IYL).

Scientists have demonstrated, for the first time, a new type of mirror that forgoes a familiar shiny metallic surface and instead reflects infrared light by using an unusual magnetic property of a non-metallic metamaterial.

Innovations from more than 600 scientific, technical and educational presentations will be highlighted during OSA's 98th Annual Meeting, FiO 2014, being held Oct. 19 - 23 in Tucson.
