An elusive biological cycle in the eye – the daily disposal and regeneration of the end tips of photoreceptor cells – has been captured in images for the first time in a living human eye. Photoreceptors are light-sensitive cells responsible for initiating vision. This glimpse into the inner workings of the eye will help scientists better understand, prevent and manage major eye diseases that affect photoreceptors like age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.

The Optical Society (OSA), the leading global professional association in optics and photonics, announced the selection of Deborah Herrin for OSA’s first annual Treasurer’s Award. The OSA Treasurer's Award recognizes an employee who has two or more years of service to The Optical Society. This individual has made significant contributions to organizational excellence, promotes and enacts innovative solutions or exemplifies inspirational leadership. Candidates are nominated by colleagues and/or the OSA community. This year’s award winner will be honored at Frontiers in Optics (FiO) 2016, The Optical Society’s (OSA) 100th Annual Meeting, in Rochester, New York, USA.

A newly developed laser pulse synthesizer that generates femtosecond pulses at mid-infrared (IR) wavelengths promises to provide scientists with a better view of the inner workings of atoms, molecules and solids. Understanding the behavior of electrons and other atomic elements at time scales shorter than one oscillation of a light wave could lead to a host of new developments, such as extremely sensitive sensors and electronics that are a thousand times faster than what is state-of-the-art today.

The Optical Society (OSA) issued the following statement regarding the announcement of Final Rule for Category XII of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) that controls the export and import of optics and photonics commodities, including laser components and systems, and describes which items have been removed from the U.S. Munitions List and placed on the less restrictive Commerce Control List. The United Nations-proclaimed International Year of Light (IYL2015) and the results of the year were presented during a ceremony in Paris, France, on 05 October 2016. The Optical Society (OSA) is a founding member of IYL, and Philip Russell, 2015 OSA President, and Chad Stark, The Optical Society (OSA) Foundation Executive Director participated in the program along with other contributing organizations. The final report highlights the 13,000 events held in 147 countries around the world.
