  • Solar power is both a clean and abundant energy source, producing electric power from photovoltaic cells and through large-scale thermal technology known as concentrating solar power. Experts believe the United States has the potential to greatly expand the use of this alternative energy source, while also creating jobs and strengthening energy security.


  • A team of researchers at the Ocean University of China has developed and tested a mobile lidar (light detection and ranging) station that can accurately measure wind speed and direction over large areas in real time -- an application useful for aviation safety, weather forecasting and sports.


  • The OSA Foundation (OSAF) is the recipient of a 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP). Honored for its collaborative project with the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Lighten Up! Discovering the Science of Light took top honors in the Curriculum, Science Instruction Book, Grades 6 – 8 category.


  • The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce that based on "impact factor," or the number of citations compared to the number of papers published, its journals Optics Letters and Optics Express are the most heavily cited journals in optics and photonics. According to the 2007 Journal Citation Report®, the Thomson Reuters rankings for journal citations, these two publications received the highest impact factor rankings of all optics journals.


  • The world's first optical pacemaker is described in an article published today in Optics Express, the Optical Society’s open-access journal. A team of scientists at Osaka University in Japan show that powerful, but very short, laser pulses can help control the beating of heart muscle cells.
