The Optical Society Launches Updated Optics4Kids Website

Youth education site launches with a new look for a more dynamic learning experience

WASHINGTON – Today, The Optical Society (OSA) has launched its redesigned youth education website, Optics4Kids.org, which seeks to provide comprehensive optics and photonics resources for kids, pre-college students, educators and parents. OpticsForKids.org has numerous activities and features such as an optics timeline, optical illusions, a career assessment tool, experiments for children of all ages and much more. The latest website updates include a fresh design and an “Ask A Scientist” feature.

“Optics, the science of light, is a technology we rely on every day. High speed internet, smartphones, and even your OLED-TV are all technologies enabled by optics,” stated Curtis Burrill, outreach program director for The Optical Society. “The new ‘Ask A Scientist’ feature allows people to send in their optics and photonics questions to our OSA scientists. We have also added a feature for educators that allows them to develop age-specific content for their students. I encourage you to view the website and discover everything it has to offer.”

In the past, Optics4Kids has received multiple awards from the Parents’ Choice Foundation by a diverse panel consisting of parents, scientists, educators, librarians, performing artists and kids. In fall of 2008, the website received the Recommended Award, and was awarded Silver Honors in spring of 2010. The Parents’ Choice Foundation serves to help parents make informed decisions about appropriate products for their children. The Foundation reviews products on a number of criteria such as entertainment, education quality and the ability to bring children and adults together for a multifaceted learning experience.

Through programs like the Optics4Kids.org website, OSA continually strives to engage the minds of future scientists. The website’s improvements intend to enhance a resource which provides children, teens and adults a fun and interactive look into the world of optics and photonics.
