LASER World of Photonics 2017 Closes in Munich with
a Record Number of Exhibitors and Attendees

WASHINGTON — The LASER World of Photonics Congress, a conference and exhibition co-sponsored by The Optical Society (OSA), attracted a record number of exhibitors and attendees over a four day period in Munich, Germany. The meeting was held in conjunction with CLEO/Europe – EQEC 2017 and the European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (ECBO 2017) from 25-29, June 2017.

Demonstrating the international appeal of the conference, 1,293 exhibitors presented their products to the more than 32,000 trade visitors from 90 countries. In addition to innovative technological breakthroughs on display, the supporting program afforded numerous insights into future photonics application areas, with plenary presentations by OSA Fellows Sir David Payne and Ferenc Krausz. Payne delivered the CLEO®/Europe plenary keynote speech, “From Optical Fiber to Amplifiers and High Power Laser,” on 26 June. Krausz spoke on “Attosecond Metrology 2.0, Solid-state Instrumental Paves the Way Towards Real-World Applications,” during the EQEC 2017 plenary session on 27 June.

Highlights and research from conferenced included (quotes taken directly from the source):

On-site analysis of tissue:
Innovative technologies that allow for fast and non-contact analysis methods that can be integrated into devices that can examine sensitive biological examples onsite. An example on display at the conference was Dermasec, a photometer for mobile skin diagnostics. In the portable device, a laser beam detects the structure and roughness of the human skin, for example on the back of the hand, via interference phenomena. Combined with a special software for data evaluation, the photometer enables the simple on-site diagnosis of skin cancer or the assessment of the effectiveness of cosmetics.

Sensors as a dynamic growth sector
The sensors exhibition area grew significantly, demonstrating that the precisely controllable tool that is light, together with camera systems and contactless optical measuring technology, underpins tomorrow’s production processes. Dr. Peter Leibinger, deputy CEO of TRUMPF GmbH & Co. KG, accords sensors a critical position as regards Industry 4.0, namely as the “link between the factory, IT, the Cloud and the supplier.”

“LASER World of PHOTONICS acts as a ‘marketplace’ where we exchange ideas with customers and competitors and where we also define our future strategy. In particular, quantum technology has seen a strong increase recently,” said Dr. Wilhelm Kaenders, Chairman of the LASER World of PHOTONICS Advisory Board and Board of Management Member of Toptica Photonics."

Herbert Walther Award
Dr. Randall Hulet from Rice University, Houston, USA was awarded the Herbert Walther Award for his pioneering achievements in the field of ultracold atomic gases, including the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation with attractive interactions and groundbreaking studies of atomic fermions. As part of the award, Hulet presented a special invited talk, entitled “Formation of Matter-Wave Soliton Trains by Modulational Instability.” The award is jointly made by the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) and The Optical Society, and is presented by each society in alternate years.
