Congressional Briefing on the Future of Lasers In America

Briefing to concentrate on expanding America’s international competiveness in laser science technology

WASHINGTON - The American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in Collaboration with the National Photonics Initiative (NPI) are hosting a Congressional briefing, “Lasers for America: Driving Advancements in Science, National Security, Manufacturing, Health and U.S. Competitiveness.” Despite the United States early lead in science and technology, it is at risk of losing its competitive advantage. Countries in Europe and Asia are investing heavily in this foundational technology. At the same time, U.S. federal investments in the research and development of the high peak power lasers has been declining significantly. Please join international scientists and representatives from American industry at this Congressional briefing to learn about the current state of laser science technology and development and how the nation can maintain U.S. preeminence in laser technology.

A major breakthrough in laser technologies, led by the United Sates, is a short-pulse, high-peak-power laser. This new class of laser could have transformative applications with far reaching impact. Smaller and less expensive laser-driven accelerators could then open up a large range of new possibilities, such as specialized medical treatments or scanning and shipping cargo for illicit materials at domestic or international ports.

Dr. Gregory Quarles, Chief Scientist, The Optical Society, will moderate the event. Panelists for the event include E. Michael Campbell, Director of the Laboratory for laser Energetics, University of Rochester; James Clayton, Senior Scientist, Varian Medical Systems, Jim Kafka, Chief Technology Officer, Spectra-Physics, a part of MKS and Wim Lemans, Director, Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Divisions, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
