The Optical Society Announces Media Event to Celebrate Rising Stars in the Science of Light

Three female pioneers to present latest research advances and share their experiences as women making their mark in optics and photonics
 
WASHINGTON, November 10, 2014—The Optical Society (OSA) today announced that it will host an inaugural press briefing to recognize a panel of three early career female scientists and innovators who have already made significant contributions to their respective fields in the science of light. The lunch press briefing will be held on Monday, November 17, 2014, at 11:30 a.m. at OSA headquarters in Washington, D.C., located at 2010 Massachusetts Avenue, NW.
 
Featured speakers with their specialty areas of focus are:
 
Meredith Lee, PhD, AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow, Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Washington, DC, USA
Projects include R&D strategy, user-centered design, data analytics, first responders, disaster resilience, crowdsourcing, and the 'Internet of Things.’
                               
Nozomi Nishimura, PhD, Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA
Research focuses on the use of in vivo imaging techniques to study the initiation and progression of disorders including Alzheimer's disease, cardiac disease and cancer metastasis.
 
Jessie Rosenberg, PhD, Research Staff Member, Silicon Photonics Team, IBM TJ Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, USA
Research focuses on developing silicon photonics technology to improve supercomputer and data center performance with high-bandwidth, low cost fiber-optic communication link.
                               
“The Rising Stars program is designed to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of researchers,” said OSA CEO Elizabeth Rogan. “These young women are generously sharing their discoveries, enthusiasm and challenges with the global scientific community.”
 
Following the speaker presentations, 2005 OSA President Susan Houde-Walter will moderate a question and answer session. Formerly a professor of optics at the University of Rochester, in 2005 Houde-Walter left the university to found her own company LaserMax, Inc. which develops quantum cascade laser technology.
