OSA Student Members Gather in Australia for IONS/KOALA Conference on Optics
WASHINGTON, Nov. 21, 2014—The International OSA Network of Students (IONS) will host the 2014 IONS - KOALA 2014 at the University of Adelaide, Australia, November 23-28. The conference, organized by the University of Adelaide OSA Student Chapter, will consist of both research focused and social events featuring the field of optics. The Optical Society (OSA) co-sponsors the event with the main goal of facilitating discussion and networking between students, across different disciplines of optics and photonics.At the start of each day, one of the following invited speakers will present a colloquium on current optics research:
· Peter Delfyett, University of Central Florida, USA
· Andre Luiten, Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS), Australia
· John Tisch, Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College, England
This IONS event is a joint collaboration between the International OSA Network of Students (IONS) and Conference on Optics, Atoms and Laser Applications (KOALA). The IONS program was created to encourage OSA Student Chapter members to organize and manage regional and online meetings. These meetings focus on developing technical and professional leadership skills, plus building important core relationships. KOALA is an annual conference held in Australia or New Zealand that is organized for students, by students, and brings together a large group of Honors, PhD and Masters students in any field of optics.
Since its inception in 2006 at OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), 39 IONS Conferences have been held all over the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. The meetings are independently managed by OSA Student Chapters and are designed to give young scientists a way to connect and collaborate with the global optics and photonics community. OSA supports IONS events through guest lecturer funding, travel grants, administrative and marketing support and event funding. More information is available on the IONS website.
