OSA Business Programming at OFC Brings Together Top Executives at Two Events to Discuss Silicon Photonics, Software-Defined Networking, and More

Speakers from Ciena, Facebook, HP, and more

WHAT: The Optical Society (OSA) and OIDA are sponsoring two industry-focused events that will be collocated with the 2014 Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference and Exposition next month in San Francisco.

The 16th annual OSA Executive Forum will bring together more than 150 senior-level executives to discuss key themes, opportunities, and challenges facing the next generation in optical networking and communications. Highly valued by participants for the frank and open discussions, OSA Executive Forum sessions explore emerging trends and action plans for tackling today's toughest business challenges. Topics this year will include: packet optical network evolution, silicon photonics, vertical integration, and non-carrier network buildouts and will feature speakers from Alcatel-Lucent, British Telecom, Cisco, IBM, Microsoft, and more. Additionally, Alan Willner of the University of Southern California will give a brief presentation titled National Photonics Initiative: Industry is Critical, covering the progress and current state the NPI, a multi-society effort that seeks to advance photonics-driven fields in the U.S. through industry, government and academic collaboration. OSA is a founding sponsor of the initiative.

The OIDA Software-Defined Photonic and Data Center Networks Workshop will look at software-defined networking (SDN), which is expected to be a key enabler for a new generation of networks by providing flexibility and control for emerging network applications. Key topics to be addressed include: can standard interfaces be described for photonic devices, should SDN control reach down to the photonics, what emerging standards in photonics can enable SDN, and the role of photonics and SDN in the data center.

WHEN/WHERE:

OSA Executive Forum: Monday, March 10, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. with a networking reception to follow in Room 103 of the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif.
