CLEO: 2015 Adds New Nobel Prize Winner Eric Betzig to Plenary Session Line-up

Betzig joins Nobel Laureate Steven Chu and Laser Luminaries Tony Heinz and Miles Padgett

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14, 2014—The organizers of the 2015 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO: 2015) announced today that Eric Betzig of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute will be a keynote speaker at the conference’s Plenary Session next May. Betzig won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry last week for his role in developing super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. Betzig joins an already impressive line-up of speakers that includes Nobel Laureate Steven Chu of Stanford University, Tony Heinz of Columbia University and Miles Padgett of the University of Glasgow.

“We are thrilled to have two Nobel Laureates and two laser luminaries headlining CLEO: 2015,” said Yu Chen of the University of Maryland and CLEO: 2015 general co-chair. “This is a fantastic way to celebrate the International Year of Light in 2015. With nearly 2,000 technical presentations and these top names at the plenary session, CLEO is the premiere laser conference in terms of quality and breadth of content. There is something for everyone at CLEO—from academics to students to industry professionals—in topics ranging from biophotonics to quantum mechanics and beyond.”

Their presentations are as follows:

Eric Betzig
Eric Betzig
  • Eric Betzig, Janelia Research Campus, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, USA
Imaging Life at High Spatiotemporal Resolution
Betzig will describe three different technologies that balance the inevitable tradeoffs of spatial resolution, speed, and non-invasiveness in fluorescence microscopy: 3-D localization microscopy, nonlinear structured illumination microscopy and lattice light sheet microscopy.

    Steven Chu
    Steven Chu

  • Steven Chu, Stanford University, USA
    Microscopy 2.0
Chu will discuss how a revolution in optical and electron microscopy will provide the tools that can have a profound impact on biology, biomedicine and bioengineering.

    Tony Heinz
    Tony Heinz

  • Tony Heinz, Columbia University, USA
Electrons in Atomically Thin Two-Dimensional Crystals
Heinz will discuss  graphene and recent advances in our understanding of the properties of electrons confined to this material of single-atom thickness.

    Miles Padgett
    Miles Padgett

  • Miles Padgett, University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK
    Light’s Twist
Padgett will explore the inner workings of light beams in which energy and momentum can twist and twirl, carrying angular momentum that can spin particles, encode information and test quantum mechanics.

As previously scheduled, Betzig will also speak at the Symposium on Advanced Optical Microscopy for Brain Imaging at CLEO: 2015. His topic there is Rapid Adaptive Optical Recovery of Diffraction-Limited Resolution Over Large Multicellular Volumes. The talk will cover his team’s work with adaptive optical microscopy to recover image quality under harsh conditions caused by the heterogeneity of biological tissue.

CLEO: 2015 takes place May 10-15 in San Jose, Calif., USA.  For more information and additional programming updates visit www.cleoconference.org.

About CLEO
With a distinguished history as the industry's leading event on laser science, the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) is the premier international forum for scientific and technical optics, uniting the fields of lasers and opto-electronics by bringing together all aspects of laser technology, from basic research to industry applications. CLEO: Expo showcases the latest products and applications from more than 300 participating companies, providing hands-on demonstrations of the latest market innovations and applications. The Expo also offers valuable on-floor programming, including Market Focus and the Technology Transfer programs.

Managed by The Optical Society (OSA) and sponsored by the American Physical Society's (APS) Laser Science Division, IEEE Photonics Society and OSA, CLEO provides the full range of critical developments in the field, showcasing the most significant milestones from laboratory to marketplace. With an unparalleled breadth and depth of coverage, CLEO connects all of the critical vertical markets in lasers and electro-optics.
