OSA Student Members Gather in Sydney for IONS/KOALA Conference on Optics

WASHINGTON, Nov. 22, 2013–The International OSA Network of Students (IONS™) will host the IONS/KOALA Conference at the University of Sydney, Australia, Nov. 25–29. The conference, organized by the University of Sydney OSA Student Chapter, will feature technical sessions and programming for graduate students in the field of optics and photonics. The Optical Society (OSA) sponsors the event.

The IONS/KOALA program includes invited speaker presentations from:

  • Kishan Dholakiakeeshan, University of St. Andrews, United Kingdom
  • Greg Forbes, QED Technologies, Australia
  • Michelle Povinelli, University of Southern California, United States
  • Geoff Smith, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia
IONS Conferences allow students from across all disciplines of optics to present their research to fellow young scientists via student-driven discussion in a learning format. Technical talks and poster sessions at IONS/KOALA will cover topics including atom optics, biophotonics, coherent x-rays, nonlinear optics, plasmonics and more.

Since its inception in 2006 at OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), 34 IONS Conferences have been held all over the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. The meetings are independently managed by OSA Student Chapters and are designed to give young scientists a way to connect and collaborate with the global optics and photonics community. OSA supports IONS events through guest lecturer funding, travel grants, administrative and marketing support and event funding.  More information is available on the IONS website.
