OSA Continues to Lead in Key Rankings in Thomson Reuters 2012 Journal Citation Reports

OSA’s open access publications all rank within the top 10 journals

WASHINGTON, June 20, 2013—The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce impressive results for its portfolio of journals according to the 2012 Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) (Thomson Reuters, 2013), which were released yesterday. OSA’s open access journals—Biomedical Optics Express, Optical Materials Express and the pioneering Optics Express— comprise the largest open-access program from a single publisher in the physical sciences and are all ranked within the top 10 out of 79 total journals in the JCR’s Optics category. Overall, the entire collection of OSA journals accounts for 41 percent of total citations received in 2012 and 37 percent of all articles published in optics—more than any other publisher on the JCR list.

Some performance highlights of OSA’s journal portfolio include:

The Impact Factor of Biomedical Optics Express, now in its second year in the JCR, has risen to 3.176, representing a 36 percent jump over last year and placing it as the No. 1 biomedical optics journal in the field.

Optical Materials Express, OSA’s newest open access title, received an initial Impact Factor of 2.616, ranking it as the No. 10 journal by Impact Factor in the Optics category.
Optics Express, which is one of the most cited journals in optics and the 11^th largest journal overall in the science edition of the JCR (out of a total 8,411 journals indexed), increased its total citations by 16 percent over last year (to 62,765) and its ranking by Impact Factor from sixth to fourth (3.546). Optics Express is also ranked No. 1 in the Optics category by Eigenfactor®, another JCR indicator that measures a journal’s total importance to the scientific community over a five-year period.
OSA’s other top journal, Optics Letters, improved its ranking by Impact Factor from seventh to fifth (3.385) and maintained its position as the third most cited journal in the Optics category.
Applied Optics, OSA’s top applications-centered journal, was the fourth most highly cited journal in optics, with a total of more than 34,000 citations.
