OSA’s Corporate Associate Members closed out 2012 with exciting innovations, groundbreaking research and new partnerships. They even played a role in the U.S. presidential race (in true bipartisan fashion). We look forward to seeing the industry evolve in the coming year.
Focus on Applications
Corning Incorporated’s Corning Cable Systems LLC provided the fiber optic network cabling and connectivity for the final U.S. presidential debate on Oct. 22, 2012 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. The presidential debate was aired on more than 10 major networks and covered by hundreds of members of the media, requiring a lightning-fast, high volume of bandwidth with proven connectivity. To meet the demand for more bandwidth, Corning installed its LANscape® Solutions. The new fiber optic network remained after the debate for the university to use.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based Agilent Technologies’ microarrays were used in a landmark prenatal research study that represents a significant milestone in understanding prenatal abnormalities. Agilent SurePrint CGH microarrays were used for the majority of the 4,400 cohort samples used in the study. Use of this technology enabled researchers to detect smaller aberrations compared to traditional karyotyping.
Infinera of Sunnyvale, Calif. announced the telecommunication industry’s first successful demonstration of a prototype Software Defined Network (SDN) Open Transport Switch (OTS) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Sciences Network’s (ESnet) Long Island Metropolitan Area Network (LIMAN) control plane test bed. This proof-of-concept demonstration shows the potential of Transport SDN, extending the concepts and benefits of SDN to the dynamic optical transport layer.
Business Partnerships and Agreements
Sandia National Laboratories of Albuquerque, N.M. has signed a pair of cooperative research and development agreements (CRADAs) with Northrop Grumman Information Systems and General Electric Global Research. The new Information Systems CRADA covers a wide range of potential research designed to enhance defense systems technologies through collaborative R&D in engineering sciences, modeling and simulation, intelligence systems and infrastructure and nuclear security. The CRADA with GE will leverage the Labs’ expertise in systems-based science and engineering with GE’s skill in energy systems to accelerate understanding and development of new energy systems.
LightPath Technologies has won a $1.1 million supply agreement to provide optics for ultra-high-resolution digital imaging equipment. The Orlando, Fla.-based company will start delivering lenses, a critical component in high-performance cameras and digital projectors, in early 2013 under an initial stocking order.
Contracts, Awards and Accolades
Semrock, Inc. of Rochester, N.Y. celebrated the expansion of their high-volume factory with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Semrock, Inc., a unit of IDEX Corporation’s Optics & Photonics platform, manufactures optical filters for the biotech and analytical instrumentation industries, as well as optical filters for more general laser and optical systems applications. The new facility will allow Semrock to provide high-performance, high-volume filter manufacturing capability.
The University of Central Florida College of Optics & Photonics (CREOL) is planning to build an optics laboratory where faculty and students would research and manufacture materials for high-powered lasers and other optics and photonics equipment. A committee of the university’s board of trustees will meet to discuss the approximately 4,500-square-foot facility, which would cost an estimated $1.5 million.
