OSA Foundation to Provide 22 Student Travel Grants in 2013

WASHINGTON, Dec. 20, 2012– The OSA Foundation (OSAF) announced today its Student Travel Grant Program opportunities for 2013. The OSAF Student Travel Grant Program awards grants to students studying science in qualifying developing nations to attend OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), as well as OSA  topical meetings and Optics and Photonics Congresses throughout the year.  OSAF will provide 22 travel grants to nine meetings around the world next year.

Grants exist as part of a suite of OSAF  programs that support optics education and outreach activities to advance youth science education, provide optics education and resources to underserved populations, provide career and professional development resources, and support awards and honors that recognize technical and business excellence. OSAF is a leading provider of grants for the optics and photonics community internationally.

“OSA meetings and conferences provide unique opportunities for students to connect with the global optics community and learn from innovators in academia and industry,” said OSA Foundation Board Chair G. Michael Morris. “Without these grants, many students might not have the opportunity to travel to OSA meetings and advance their careers. The OSA Foundation is pleased to offer grants that help offset travel costs and further our goal to inspire future generations of science, engineering and business leaders.”

Travel grant recipients are selected by the co-chairs of each meeting. Applications are based on the following criteria:
  • Work or study in a qualifying developing nation
  • Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program
  • Demonstrated need for travel support
  • Statement on the value of attending the conference
Grants available for 2013 are highlighted below. More information on the Student Travel Grant Program is available on the OSAF website. More information regarding the events above and others can be found on the OSA website.
