OSA Foundation Announces 2012 Corning Student Paper Competition Finalists

WASHINGTON, Feb. 17 – The OSA Foundation and Corning Incorporated today announced the finalists of the Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition, which recognizes student leaders in the field of optical communications. The winners will be announced at this year’s Optical Fiber Communication/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) at the Los Angeles Convention Center, March 4-8.

The six finalists, hailing from six different countries, were selected from 362 paper submissions. Submissions were reviewed and scored by the OFC/NFOEC Technical Program Committee and 27 semi-finalists were selected based on standard OFC/NFOEC paper review criteria. The Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition Committee, comprised of the OFC/NFOEC general chairs and program chairs, selected the finalists and will view their presentations at the conference to determine the winners. Finalists are judged on innovation, research excellence and presentation skills. One first place winner and two honorable mention winners will be selected, receiving $1,500 and $1,000 respectively.

“Each year the Corning student paper competition continues to showcase some of the brightest young minds in the global optical communications community,” said OFC/NFOEC Program Chair Ed Murphy. “This year’s finalists are no exception. These six students have demonstrated remarkable promise through their high quality work. We congratulate them and look forward to reviewing their presentations at OFC/NFOEC.”

    Paper: Dipole radiation model for surface roughness scattering in hollow-core fibers
