First Recipient of Corning Outstanding Student Paper Award Competition Announced
Frederik Van Laere, Ghent Univ.-IMEC, Belgium Receives Top Honors
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 28 – Corning, Incorporated and the OSA Foundation today announced the winner of the inaugural Corning Outstanding Student Paper Award Competition, which recognizes future leaders in optical communications. Frederik Van Laere, Ghent Univ.-IMEC, Belgiumwas awarded top honors for his paper, “Multifunctional Photonic Crystal Compact Demux-Detector on InP.” The $1,500 award and $1,000 honorable mentions will be formally bestowed Thursday, February 28 during the post-deadline paper session at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition and National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) in San Diego, Calif.
Van Laere’s research demonstrates a very compact multifunctional photonic crystal device on InP membrane. The abstract reports that it showcased grating-coupled fibers feed a multimode photonic crystal wedged waveguide accomplishing individually selectable coarse WDM demux within 20 μm per channel toward membrane integrated detectors.
Chosen from 410 entries, Van Laere’s paper was singled out from a number of high-quality papers submitted by internationally renowned colleges and universities. Candidate submissions were initially reviewed according to standard OFC/NFOEC paper review procedures. Six finalists were chosen from these papers, and the winner and honorable mentions were established following a special presentation competition on Sunday, February 24 during OFC/NFOEC.
“We are honored to present Frederik Van Laere with the first Corning Student Award,” said Ekaterina Golovchenko of Tyco Telecommunications and one of this year’s OFC/NFOEC technical program chairs. “The program committee was extremely impressed with all of the submissions, which were some of the most innovative at the conference. We congratulate all of the winners and finalists and look forward to next year’s competition.”
