Created in 1947, the International Commission for Optics (ICO) seeks to contribute, on an international basis, to the progress and diffusion of knowledge in the field of optics. Since its foundation, the ICO is an External Commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), and a Scientific Associate of the International Council for Science (ICSU ) since 2005.
ICO's objective is to contribute, on an international basis, to the progress and diffusion of knowledge in the field of optics. ICO is recognized for outreach programs in support of optics in developing countries, international exchange of scientific information and standards, and sponsorship of international conferences.

OSA joined ICO as an Organizational Member in 1999 - the year this membership category was created. Through its fiscal sponsorship agreement with the OSA Foundation, charitable donations can be made in support of ICO activities.
