Synopsys to acquire Ansys

Tom Hausken, Senior Industry Advisor

Two familiar names in the optical design software space are set to join forces. Synopsys, which owns Code V, OptSim and other optical design tools, is acquiring simulation and analysis software developer Ansys, the firm behind the Speos, Zemax OpticStudio and Lumerical brands.

Synopsys is a Silicon Valley–based company, specializing in creating electronic design automation (EDA) software for the semiconductor industry. For the past seven years, it partnered with Ansys to bolster their EDA software with simulation and analytics tools. The proposed acquisition, which will close in the first half of 2025 pending shareholder and regulatory approvals, is an attempt to formalize and extend the Synopsys/Ansys partnership.

Synopsys leadership hopes that bringing the simulation and analytical expertise in-house will improve the experience for customers using their products and enable end-to-end solutions for semiconductor design.

The acquisition is a cash-and-stock deal valued at US$35 billion. Like any acquisition or merger between companies in similar fields, the deal subject to review by the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
