Optics Express Receives Grant for Authors from Developing Countries to Publish in Open Access Journal
May 7, 2005 (Washington, DC)-- Optics Express , the Optical Society of America's (OSA) all electronic, open access journal, has recently been named a recipient of a $3000 grant from the Soros Foundation's Open Society Institute (OSI). The grant will cover article charges incurred by authors from developing or transition countries whose work has been accepted for publication. Optics Express was one of 23 journals that were judged successful advocates of open access as defined by the principles of the Budapest Open Access Initiative. Optics Express premiered in 1997 as OSA's first open access, peer reviewed journal supported by author fees instead of subscription fees. The journal is free to the public through the web site.
OSI is a private operating and grant making foundation based in New York City that serves as the hub of the Soros Foundations Network, a group of autonomous foundations and organizations in more than 50 countries. OSI and the network implement a range of initiatives that aim to promote open societies by shaping government policy and supporting education, media, public health, and human and women's rights, as well as social, legal, and economic reform.
