New Views on Battery Diagnostics

Electric vehicles (EVs) have become increasingly popular in recent years, a shift motivated by the urgent need to reduce the carbon emissions and air pollution produced by gas-powered automobiles. As the lithium-ion batteries that power EVs—and account for about a third of their cost—continue to improve, the cars have become a more affordable and dependable option for drivers.

To maintain the upward trajectory in EVs, scientists and engineers need better diagnostic techniques to help them understand the batteries' internal dynamics. The cover story in the March 2024 issue of Optica's Optics and Photonics News (OPN) looks at the latest developments in battery diagnostics, including the integration of optical-fiber sensors, and how such techniques could improve battery design and manufacture.
