As it does each December, Optica's Optics & Photonics News (OPN) offers a review of 30 of the past year's most interesting recent research stories in optics and photonics—providing a picture of the field's wide scope and innovation. This year's installment includes samples of cutting-edge work ranging from metasurfaces that boost color-imaging sensitivity to new approaches to holographic imaging to a trilobite-eye-inspired camera with extreme depth of field to wavelength multiplexing for quantum networks.

OPN also talked with six of the scientists behind the work highlighted in the issue, for their thoughts on what might be ahead for research in their areas in 2023 and beyond. And the magazine's annual After Image Photo Contest rounds out the year-end celebration with spectacular images on optical themes from members.
