OSA Congratulates The 2017 Nobel Prize Winners in Physics
 

Astrophysicists have long sought to detect ripples in space-time, called gravitational waves, since Albert Einstein's 1916 prediction of General Relativity. But only some of the most massive astrophysical events, such as mergers of black holes and neutron stars, can produce gravitational waves strong enough to be detected on earth. Today, the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne, California Institute of Technology, USA and Rainer Weiss, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, "for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves." 

On 11 February 2016, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration announced that it had observed gravitational waves from two colliding black holes, 100 years to the month, after Einstein predicted General Relativity. Today, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration involves some 1,200 scientists and 100 research institutions around the world. With this many 'eyes' pointed to the sky, the research team can only continue to reach great heights in astrophysics.

NSF Awards $9M Grant to UCSB Optical Brain Imaging Group
 

A multidisciplinary team of researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) has been awarded $9 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF; Arlington, VA) to develop and widely share state-of-the-art optical brain imaging techniques.

The research group, including UCSB scientists and OSA Member John Bowers, Michael Goard, and Luke Theogarajan, was recognized for its collaborative NEMONIC (NExt generation MultiphOton NeuroImaging Consortium) project, which pushes the boundaries of brain imaging.

OSA Vice-President Ursula Gibson Visits Fukuoka, Japan

OSA Vice-President Ursula Gibson attended the 77th Autumn Meeting of the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) and delivered a talk on semiconductor core fibers for optoelectronics during the 6th OSA/JSAP Joint English-language Symposium. OSA Members had the opportunity to meet and talk with Ursula during a special reception at a local sake brewery.

The OSA Student Chapter of Chernivtsi National University, Ukraine, invited me to give a talk on my research subject, namely, exploiting spectral and imaging Mueller polarimetry for the characterization of structured and random media. In my lecture, I recalled the basic concepts of polarized light optics and presented to the students and young researchers our results on using spectrally resolved Mueller polarimetry for the metrology in microelectronics and multi-wavelength imaging Mueller polarimetry for early detection of cancer. After my presentation, I had an informal discussion with students where I answered many questions. Using polarized light for the detection of anisotropy of either artificial or natural structures (e.g. nanoimprint gratings or extracellular collagen matrix of tissue) is a fascinating research subject. It can open new perspectives for the optical non-destructive metrology, biomedical diagnostics, and efficient disease management and follow up of the treatment. 

In my opinion, the OSA Traveling Lecturer Program provides the unique opportunity for young researchers to broaden their horizons and discover new fields of applications through the exchange of ideas with the Traveling Lecturers. I am convinced that this program will have an impact on their choice of future research directions.

Guide Star Alliance Wins 2017 Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award

Guide Star Alliance, representing TOPTICA Photonics and MPB Communications (MPBC), was awarded the 2017 award for the development of the first high-power, fully remote-controlled, turn-key sodium guide star laser system with optimized photon return enabling next-generation adaptive optics under the extreme conditions of telescope sites. Wallace Clements, MPBC, Daoping Wei, MPBC, and Wilhelm Kaenders,TOPTICA (pictured with OSA President Eric Mazur) accepted the award on behalf of the team. Scott Dineen Named 2017 OSA Treasurer's Award Recipient

Scott Dineen, OSA Senior Director of Production and Technology, received the 2017 staff award for excellence in publishing technology and development of new tools essential for maintaining and enhancing OSA's publishing leadership. PRISM and the OSA Publishing platforms are prime examples of his abilities. Learn more about this award.
2018 OSA Fellow Class Announced

The OSA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that 101 OSA Members have been elected as OSA Fellows. OSA Fellows are members who have served the Society and our community with distinction. They are elected based on several factors, including specific scientific, engineering, educational and technological contributions, technical or industry leadership as well as service to OSA and the global optics community. Please join us in congratulating the 2018 Fellows.

Congratulations Honorary Members: David J. Wineland and Amnon Yariv

The most distinguished of all OSA Member categories, Honorary Membership is awarded to individuals who have made unique, seminal contributions to the field of optics. David J. Wineland, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA and Amnon Yariv, California Institute of Technology, USA have been elected as 2017 OSA Honorary Members.

Wineland is honored for pioneering advances in laser cooling of ions together with unprecedented control of individual ions in foundational experiments of quantum optics and quantum information, and Yariv for pioneering scientific and engineering contributions to photonics and quantum electronics that have profoundly impacted lightwave communications and the field of optics as a whole. View the full list of Honorary Members.

Do you know a public official who has been a champion of optics? Tell us about him or her. Each year, OSA's Advocate of Optics Recognition commends an outstanding public official who demonstrates leadership in support of the advancement of the science of light. The Public Policy Committee is soliciting nominations from OSA Members and will select a candidate based on his/her commitment to science and science policy, level of familiarity with optics and photonics, level of interaction with OSA or OSA Members in the past year, and record of consistent support of science, optics and photonics. Recipients will also have the opportunity to be placed and mentored on OSA Committees, further enhancing their professional development.

Apply to the ICTP Winter College on Extreme Non-linear Optics, Attosecond Science and High-field Physics

5 - 16 February 2018
Trieste, Italy

The aim of the Winter College is to offer Ph.D. students a broad training on extreme light science: from ultra short and ultra intense laser pulse generation, to attosecond and Free Electron Laser (FEL) technology, focusing on applications of attosecond pulse generation in atomic and molecular physics, photo-chemistry and nanoscience, and the application of extreme light sources to matter-radiation interactions in general. An ICTP PREPARATORY SCHOOL will be organized the week before the College (from 29 January to 3 February 2018) for a limited number of selected participants.
