Frontiers in Optics 2013—A Successful First Stop on OSA's Journey to 2016

Frontiers in Optics/Laser Science 2013 concluded in sunny Orlando, Florida, after five days of in-depth technical and business programming, engaging exhibits and collaborative events. The industry’s leading experts spoke on the latest research and applications of optical technologies including hot topics such as biomedical optics, silicon photonics, fiber optics, lasers, hybrid integrated photonics, and more.

This was OSA’s first stop on the road to celebrating its 100th Anniversary in Rochester, New York, USA in 2016. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s conference in Tucson, Arizona, USA, 19-23 October 2014.

For a comprehensive summary of the 2013 conference, view the Daily Wrap-ups.

Student Leadership Conference at FiO

On October 6th, 184 students kicked off FiO/LS with the 12th annual Student Leadership Conference, representatives came from 173 chapters and 42 countries. Highlights included welcome remarks from OSA CEO Liz Rogan, a keynote presentation from OSA Treasurer Steve Fantone and an International Year of Light presentation from Past President Anthony Johnson.

Congratulations to OSA Foundation 2013 Travel and Scholarship Winners

The OSA Foundation is proud to announce that 33 grants were awarded to students at FiO this year. These grants served varied purposes, from recognizing research excellence to helping cover travel costs to attend the conference. See the full list of winners.

Your charitable gifts to the OSA Foundation directly touch the lives of the upcoming generation of optics and photonics innovators.  A direct way to make a significant difference is to earmark your funds to one or more of the OSA Foundation’s current campaigns.  No matter how you decide to allocate your contribution, OSA will match your tax-deductible gift dollar for dollar.

Nomination Deadline Extended for the Edwin H. Land Medal

LandOSA and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) have extended the nomination deadline for the 2014 Land Medal to 4 November 2013. The Land Medal was established in 1992 to honor Edwin H. Land to recognize his unique career as scientist, technologist, industrialist, humanist and public servant.  This medal recognizes pioneering work empowered by scientific research to create inventions, technologies, and products. The recipient should share Land’s insatiable scientific intensity and curiosity in optics and imaging and, in part, reflect his image as inventor, scientist, entrepreneur, and teacher.  More information is available on-line or by contacting the OSA Awards Office (awards@osa.org, 1.202.416.1960)

Watch the Videos—Enabled by Optics Contest Winner

Trojan Technologies, winner of the first annual OSA Enabled by Optics Contest, uses environmentally responsible, cost-effective ultraviolet (UV) light, in place of chemicals, to prevent the worldwide spread of harmful organisms in the water supply and to destroy harmful contaminants.

View OSA's special video overview of their optical solutions.  Also available is an in-depth roundtable interview with Trojan Technologies' management and an end-user of their optical technology.  Watch the videos.

OSA's Annual Enabled by Optics Contest provides companies, and students, with a platform to explain how optics technology has impacted our world.
