In its third year, the Applied Industrial Optics (AIO) division is preparing to build upon the success of both the 2010 and 2011 annual meetings by expanding the conference to include, not only optical technologies that have been successfully applied to industrial/commercial applications, but also exciting, cutting-edge advances in optical components and/or systems, which have been identified as promising new technologies within the field of applied optics.

The Program Committee believes that this expansion will serve two (2) purposes: 1) allowing those companies who have successfully applied optical technologies within diverse market segments to catch a glimpse of new technologies in the development pipeline that will enhance their product offerings or expand their market reach, and 2) allowing companies, research groups, and/or individuals with new and innovative optical technologies to develop a better understanding of what is required to successfully commercialize (i.e., apply) optical technologies in industrial environments.

The Committee desires to continue to attract presenters from diverse market sectors, as we have in the past, such as environmental, medical, defense, oil & gas , food & beverage, and pharmaceutical, to name a few.

With respect to applied optical technologies, the Committee is looking to showcase discussions which highlight the reasons behind the use of optics within an application in addition to any difficulties encountered in applying the technology to the application.  Further, the organizers are especially interested in those applications with extreme requirements or systems that must operate in harsh environments.

With respect to innovative, cutting-edge, near-to-market advances, the organizers are interested in discussions which highlight how these advancements may serve to expand the reach of applied optics in the marketplace.

As with 2011, the Committee is planning to hold Joint Sessions with other meetings within the Congress, which resulted in many stimulating discussions between attendees from a number of divisions within the Congress increasing the cross pollination of ideas between these diverse communities.

It is the goal of AIO to create a stage upon which new advancements can be readily disclosed and lessons-learned regarding the application of optical technologies can be shared to facilitate the rapid adoption and utility of optical technologies within industry.
