Dr. Ravi Athale, Progam Officer, Office of Naval Research

Dr. Athale is currently a Program Officer at Office of Naval Research managing research in imaging sensors, optical computing and nanophotonics.  He received PhD in Electrical Engineering from UC San Diego in 1980.  Prior to ONR, he has held research, teaching and program management positions at Naval Research Laboratory, BDM Corporation, George Mason University, DARPA and MITRE Corporation.  His research and programmatic interests are optical processing, optical interconnects, nanophotonics and imaging sensors.  He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and has received Optical Society of America's Leadership Award and Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service.


William Beck, The Laser Guy, Barco

Bill Beck is Barco’s Laser Guy, supporting Digital Cinema and other business units in their development and commercialization of laser illumination technology.  He will be one of the company’s key spokespersons for laser projection products, technology and new applications. Bill also represents Barco at the Laser Illuminated Projector Association (LIPA) and other laser related industry groups.

Bill has been a pioneer in laser projection since 2003, when he started planning the strategy and products for Laser Light Engines, his most recent start-up.  He has extensive background in the laser requirements for Digital Cinema, Giant Screen, Theme Park, and Industrial applications of laser illumination for 2D and 3D projection and sensing.  He is now an acknowledged domain expert in laser and fiberoptic technology for projection displays.

In June 2014, Bill began supporting Barco’s global commercialization initiatives for its first Laser Cinema projector and advanced laser projection technology. His extensive market, technical and applications knowledge will guide current product marketing and future product planning.  Bill will also contribute to Barco’s engineering efforts with his long experience in laser engine development and supply chain contacts.
 
Before joining Barco, Bill Beck was founding CEO of Laser Light Engines; Co-founder of LIPA and President of BTM Consulting, LLC, as well as three fiberoptic start-ups.  He has authored numerous papers, articles and talks on lasers and fiberoptics for projection displays and related applications.


Josh Conway, Program Manager, DARPA

Dr. Josh Conway joined DARPA in August 2012 as a program manager for the Microsystems Technology Office. In that role he has created, managed and transitioned many photonics programs that are critical to national security. This portfolio spans the space from position, navigation and timing (PNT) devices to electronic warfare and heterogeneous integration.  Given the emerging potential of integrated photonic systems, Dr Conway continues to be the photonics advocate within DARPA for a resurgence of funding to meet both civil and military needs.


Chris Fish, Vice President, McAllister & Quinn

Chris Fish serves as Vice President at McAllister & Quinn. Chris brings over 20 years of government and consulting experience combined with a detailed understanding of the high-technology and defense industries. Chris understands the complex applications of high-technology industries and offers clients assistance in developing strategies to explain these technologies in a context that elected officials and program managers will understand and care about. Chris has experience working within all technology sectors, from materials and tooling to component manufacturing and end product manufacturing. Chris has experience working with both individual organizations and consortiums to secure government incentives to support technology development and the manufacturing of high-technology products. He has assisted clients in securing tens of millions of dollars in government funding resources. Chris has held numerous positions within congressional offices from Executive Assistant to Chief of Staff.  He has experience in the political arena of Washington, D.C., and has an understanding of the impact of this political arena on public policy. He has served as Campaign Manager for numerous Congressional and statewide elections. He started his professional career as an aide to former New York Senator Alfonse D’Amato. Chris grew up in Putnam County, New York, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the State University of New York College at Oneonta.


Cameron Gray, Managing Director - Investment Banking, MDB Capital Group

Dr. Gray joined MDB Capital Group in 2013 as Managing Director of Investment Banking. Dr. Gray’s background spans technical fields, business, investment and intellectual property law. Prior, Dr. Gray was Senior Vice President at ICAP Patent Brokerage, where he managed the life sciences business and Asia Pacific business. He brings significant experience in the intellectual property markets. Prior to his tenure at ICAP, Dr. Gray was Director of Strategic Development with IPXI, a financial exchange dedicated to intellectual property-related contracts, where he was an integral part of the management team and oversaw product development, outside counsel, deal sourcing and established strategic direction.

Dr. Gray also has served as an associate in Expert Testimony and Investments at Ocean Tomo. Prior to his focus on the intellectual property markets, Dr. Gray worked in the banking sector and fixed income trading. Dr. Gray has a J.D. from George Washington University School of Law, a Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of Virginia, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics from Princeton University.


Mike Haney, Program Director, ARPA-E

Dr. Haney serves as a Program Director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).  He is on assignment from the University of Delaware, where he is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.  Previous positions include Program Manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and co-founder of Applied Photonics, Inc.  He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and B.S. in Physics from University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  Dr. Haney is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America.

 

Tom Hausken, Senior Industry Advisor, OIDA

With over 30 years in optoelectronics, Tom Hausken focuses on industry activities at OSA—the Optical Society.  This includes OIDA, where he held a position earlier in his career.  For 13 years until 2012, Hausken led market research and strategy consulting for lasers, image sensors, and a range of other photonic products at Strategies Unlimited.  He was also a telecom policy analyst at the U.S. Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, and held R&D and production positions at Alcatel and Texas Instruments in photonics and electronics.  He has a PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara, in optoelectronics.


Vladimir G. Kozlov, Founder and CEO, LightCounting LLC

Dr. Vladimir Kozlov is the founder and CEO of LightCounting an optical communications market research company. LightCounting was established in 2004 with an objective of providing in-depth coverage of market and technologies for high speed optoelectronic interfaces employed in communications. By now, the company employs a team of industry experts and offers comprehensive coverage of optical communications supply chain.
 
Dr. Kozlov has more than 25 years of experience in optoelectronics, optical communications and market research. He also co-founded several other companies, including Fianium, LX Medical and Microtech Instruments, developing laser systems for medical applications.

Dr. Kozlov held market analyst, product development and research staff positions at RHK Inc., Lucent Technologies and Princeton University. Dr. Kozlov holds several US patents and has numerous publications in the area of optoelectronics. He received M. Sc. at Moscow State University in Russia and Ph. D in Physics at Brown University in the United States.


Murphy Lin, Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA)

Mr. Ying-yi Lin (Murphy) is an Executive Assistant to CEO in Photonics Industry & Technology Association (PIDA).  He had engaged in the industry & market survey for 18 years, and now he is responsible for a research division as well as in charge of the business development in PIDA. Based on photonics field research, PIDA developed several businesses including exhibition (Photonics Taiwan), serial seminars and training course, membership’s information service, and consulting service.

Ying-yi was born in year 1966, Taipei.  He graduated form Physics Department, Tunghai University, and then received master degree of Science, Electrophysics at Polytechnic Institute of NYU, New York in 1996.  He ever served in Topology Research Institute, and Fornex Technology Corp. Now he leads the research team in PIDA to explore the trend of Photonics in term of technology, industry, and market.


Ferris Lipscomb, VP of Marketing, NeoPhotonics Corp.

Dr. G. Ferris Lipscomb has served as NeoPhotonics’ Vice President of Marketing since November 2002. Prior to joining NeoPhotonics, Dr. Lipscomb served in various marketing, management and technical roles at Lightwave Microsystems Corporation, Akzo Nobel Electronic Products, Inc.  and the Lockheed Missiles & Space Company.  From September 1981 until August 1983, Dr. Lipscomb served on the Technical Staff of the TRW Technology Research Center.  Dr. Lipscomb holds a doctorate degree in solid state physics from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor of science degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.


Jason Miller, Office of the President, White House

Jason Miller is the Special Assistant to the President for Manufacturing Policy, working within the National Economic Council in the White House to lead the Administration’s efforts to coordinate policy and federal activities supporting U.S. manufacturing including the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI). He joined the Obama Administration in April 2010. Jason reports to Jeffrey Zients, Director of the National Economic Council and Assistant to the President for Economic Policy. Jeffrey Zients reports to White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough who reports directly to the President. Prior to joining the Administration, Jason advised global companies as a management consultant with The Boston Consulting Group in San Francisco. He worked with senior executives in the energy and technology manufacturing sectors on strategic, operational, and organizational issues. Earlier in his career, Jason was at Marakon Associates, a boutique consulting firm, where he provided business advice on corporate finance and strategic issues in manufacturing, healthcare, and energy companies. Jason originally hails from Chicago, Illinois. He received a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, a M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and a M.P.A. from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.


Kal Shastri, Distinguished Engineer, Cisco

Kal received his Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University in 1985 and his Masters in Physics from IIT, Kanpur, India in 1976. Kal worked at AT&T Bell Laboratory from 1985 to 1996. He worked on the physical layer circuits for optical communication systems and hardware accelerator micro-controller and system.

In 1997, Kal founded AANetcom – first company to solve high speed interconnect problem by designing and commercializing multiple channel CMOS Serdes. AANetcom was acquired by PMC-Sierra in March, 2000. In 2002, Kal cofounded Lightwire – with the goal of solving high speed optical interconnects, using CMOS Photonics. Lightwire was acquired by Cisco in March, 2012.



Natarajan 'Subu' Subrahmanyan, Senior Managing Director, The Juda Group

Natarajan ‘Subu’ Subrahmanyan, CFA is a Senior Managing Director and lead research analyst for communications equipment companies at The Juda Group, a division of Concept Capital Markets. Mr. Subrahmanyan’s research focuses on leading data and optical networking companies. He has been featured on the Wall Street Journal’s Best of the Street Analyst List, and was named the best up-and-comer in telecom equipment in the Institutional Investor polls.

Mr. Subrahmanyan joined The Juda Group in January 2003 prior to which he was lead research analyst for data and optical networking companies at Goldman Sachs. He holds an MBA from the Owen School at Vanderbilt University and a B.S in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Anna University in Madras, India.


Georg Treusch, Managing Director, TRUMPF Photonics, Inc.

George Treusch is the Managing Director of TRUMPF Photonics, Inc. Under his leadership TRUMPF Photonics has grown to be the largest high power diode laser bar manufacturer worldwide. From 2005 to 2009, Treusch was the General Manager-VP of DILAS Diode Laser Inc., where he started DILAS as a subsidiary of Rofin Sinar Inc, Plymouth, MI within the Rofin Sinar Technologies Corporation (RSTI) in order to strengthen the presence of DILAS GmbH (also part of RSTI) in the US market. From 1999 to 2005, he was the Senior Engineering Manager for Spectra Physics leading the team of engineers and technicians to support all High Power Diode Laser customers in Japan, Europe and USA and creating a significant part of the existing product road map. Treusch was also a Founding Member and Head of Department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology, Aachen, Germany from 1985 to 1998. In 1985 Treush received his Ph.D in physics from Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, Germany.
