    The Optical Society’s (OSA) Foundation Board of Directors recently approved new funding for programs taking place this year. These grants will help advance international optics-related education by renewing successful grants and introducing new programs. The grants and programs will benefit students and educators around the world by providing resources such as classroom sets, travel support and program funding.

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) is the recipient of a 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP). Honored for its collaborative project with the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Lighten Up! Discovering the Science of Light took top honors in the Curriculum, Science Instruction Book, Grades 6 – 8 category.

    The Optical Society of America (OSA) Foundation is pleased to honor the work of Harvey Pollicove by supporting the Harvey M. Pollicove Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a student who is pursuing a degree in the field of precision optics manufacturing. The first scholarship will be given this fall.

    Optics and Vision Exhibit Opens at Fleischmann Planetarium in Reno, Nevada

    The University of Nevada, Reno's (UNR) Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center opened its newest exhibit last week. "Perceptual Relativity" is an interactive exhibit exploring individual perception through optical illusions. It was developed by faculty from the UNR Department of Psychology and funded in part by a grant from the Optical Society of America (OSA) Foundation.

    The Optical Society of America (OSA) Foundation Board of Directors recently approved funding for three new optics-related programs for 2007 through 2009. These grants will provide funds for optics curriculum for EASTCONN, a non-profit education service center; for an optics education and hands-on demonstration program developed by the OSA Rochester (N.Y.) Local Section; and for the distribution of educational materials to developing nations.

    OSA's Engineering Excellence Award Renamed in Honor of Paul F. Forman

    The Optical Society of America (OSA) Foundation is pleased to announce the renaming of OSA's Engineering Excellence Award to the Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Award. The new name honors the contributions to optical engineering by the late Paul Forman, co-founder of Zygo Corporation and OSA fellow.

    In a new milestone for ongoing work toward establishing an optics activity book for the Girl Scouts of the USA, the Central Maryland Girl Scouts Council and Girl Scout Council of The Nation's Capital visited the optics laboratory at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). There, the girls participated in experiments that are slated to be a part of an optics and photonics workbook.
