    OSA Foundation Grant Recognizes Graduate Students’ Optical Engineering and Lens Design Research Excellence

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) today announced Matthew N. Barnum of the University of Arizona and Anthony J. Visconti of the University of Rochester are the recipients of the 2012 Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Travel Grant. The grant was established by Optical Research Associates (ORA®), now the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys, Inc., as a memorial to ORA’s former President and Chief Executive Officer Robert S. Hilbert. The grant recognizes the research excellence of graduate students in the areas of optical engineering, lens design, and/or illumination design.

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) is pleased to announce the 2012 recipients of the Newport Student Travel Grants and the Incubic/Milton Chang Student Travel Grants. The 15 recipients, from 10 countries, will present research papers this week at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO: 2012) in San Jose.

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF), HRL Laboratories LLC, the IEEE Photonics Society and the APS Division of Laser Science are pleased to announce the semi-finalists for the annual Theodore Maiman Student Paper Competition. The winners will be announced at the 2012 Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics (CLEO: 2012), taking place in San Jose May 6-11.

    New OSA Award Named in Honor of Michael S. Feld

    The Optical Society (OSA) and the OSA Foundation (OSAF) are pleased to announce the establishment of the Michael S. Feld Biophotonics Award, honoring Professor Feld’s fundamental contributions in the field of laser science and applied physics for solving biomedical problems. The OSA Foundation has begun fundraising efforts to permanently endow the award.

    Anonymous Donor Agrees to Match Up to $50,000 of Donations to Paul Bonenfant Memorial Scholarship

    The OSA Foundation has announced a new challenge grant that will benefit the recently launched Paul A. Bonenfant Memorial Scholarship. An anonymous donor has agreed to a 1:1 match of any donation made after Feb. 14, up to $50,000. The total fundraising goal for the campaign is $190,000. The Foundation is challenging supporters to meet the $50,000 goal by the end of March.

    The OSA Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign for the Siegman International Summer School on Lasers, named in honor of Anthony E. Siegman, Optical Society (OSA) past president and founding member of the OSA Foundation Board. Siegman passed away in October 2011 at the age of 79.

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) has announced the launch of a fundraising campaign to establish the Paul Anthony Bonenfant Memorial Scholarship. The Foundation aims to successfully achieve its fundraising goal by this spring so that the scholarship program can be formally in place and ready for student applicants by year-end.

    Author Milton Chang Donates Book to Help OSA Foundation's Fundraising Efforts

    The OSA Foundation announced today that author, entrepreneur, and investor Milton Chang has donated 1,000 copies of his new book, Toward Entrepreneurship: Establishing a Successful Technology Business, to the Foundation. Proceeds from sales of the books will be donated to the OSA Foundation and matched 100 percent by the Optical Society (OSA). Books must be purchased through the OSA Foundation website to qualify.
