    The OSA Foundation this week announced the recipients of its student awards and travel grants related to the Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics (CLEO: 2013), taking place this week at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, Calif.

    OSA Foundation Receives $250,000 Donation from IPG Photonics for Siegman International School on Lasers

    The OSA Foundation has received a $250,000 donation from IPG Photonics (IPG) for the Siegman International School on Lasers Endowment. The gift provided by IPG will help permanently establish the program, modeled after the summer school program that first took place in 2011 at the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP). The donation will go toward providing world-class lecturers, important student travel grants and achievement awards as well as other general programming costs. In recognition of this significant contribution, IPG has been named co-founder of the school.

    The OSA Foundation and Corning Incorporated today announced the finalists of the Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition, which recognizes student leaders in the field of optical communications. The winners will be announced at this year’s Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) at the Anaheim Convention Center, March 17 – 21, in Anaheim, Calif.

    OSA Foundation Announces Success of Paul Bonenfant Scholarship Fundraising Campaign

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) today announced the successful completion of the Paul A. Bonenfant Memorial Scholarship fundraising campaign, surpassing the total fundraising goal of $190,000. The need-based scholarship will enable undergraduate students enrolled in engineering or physical science programs to attend semester-abroad programs offered through their college or university.

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) announced today its Student Travel Grant Program opportunities for 2013. The OSAF Student Travel Grant Program awards grants to students studying science in qualifying developing nations to attend OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), as well as OSA topical meetings and Optics and Photonics Congresses throughout the year.

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) is pleased to announce Dmitry S. Bodunov of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in Russia was this year’s recipient of a travel grant to the Optical Society’s (OSA) Renewable Energy and the Environment Congress that took place Nov. 11-14 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

    OSA Foundation Receives Donation of Lasers Book to Help Raise Funds for Siegman Laser Summer School

    The OSA Foundation announced today that University Science Books, the publisher of Anthony “Tony” Siegman’s well-known book Lasers, is donating 300 copies of the text to the Foundation for re-sale to raise money for the Siegman International Summer School on Lasers in memory of the author who passed away last year. The effort is part of an endowment campaign launched earlier this year to permanently fund the summer school, which aims to honor Seigman for the tremendous contributions he made to the scientific community and his passion for teaching while providing optics graduate students around the world with the opportunity to experience a program of lectures, networking opportunities, poster presentations, research sharing and more.

    The OSA Foundation is pleased to announce the finalists of the 2012 Emil Wolf Outstanding Student Paper Competition. The competition recognizes excellence in innovation, research and presentation of graduate students. The finalists will present their work at the Optical Society’s (OSA) Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO) 2012, which will take place Oct. 14-18 in Rochester, N.Y.

    OSA Foundation Launches Endowment Campaign for New Summer Learning Program in Honor of Anthony Siegman

    The OSA Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign for the Siegman International Summer School on Lasers, named in honor of Anthony E. Siegman, Optical Society (OSA) past president and founding member of the OSA Foundation Board. Siegman passed away in October 2011 at the age of 79.
