In this webinar hosted by the Optical Biosensors Technical Group, Laura Lechuga will provide an introduction to the field of biosensors in general, and photonic biosensors in particular. Prof. Lechuga will then provide an overview of the different types of nanophotonic biosensors, including plasmonics (SPR), nanoplasmonics (LSPR) and silicon photonics biosensors (as ring resonators or interferometers). The working principle, design, fabrication, and performance of each type will be discussed. In addition, a description of the biofunctionalization techniques routes and their integration in full-compact lab-on-chip platforms to be used as point-of-care instruments will be commented. The crucial aspect of the applicability of biosensors devices for the early diagnosis of diseases (as cancer or infections) in real clinical environments will also be discussed to demonstrate their impact in health and society.

Subject Matter Level: Introductory - Assumes little previous knowledge of the topic

What You Will Learn:
• General knowledge about Photonics Biosensors and state-of-the-art of the field
• Real applications in clinical diagnostics and tech transfer opportunities

Who Should Attend:
• PhD students and postdocs
• Early researchers
• Any scientist interested in the field

About the Presenter: Laura M. Lechuga from Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2)

Prof. Laura M. Lechuga is Full Professor of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Head of the Nanobiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) in Barcelona (Spain). The principal focus of her research is the development of novel nanobiosensor devices based on Nanoplasmonics and Silicon Photonics principles for point-of-care diagnostics. Prof. Lechuga is a world reference in the Photonic Biosensor area, making key contributions and opening new horizons in this field. She has published over 300 articles, book chapters and proceedings, has 8 families of patents and four trade secrets, has co-founded two spin-offs companies and has presented her work in more than 490 invited talks. The quality of her research has been recognised by more than 22 prestigious prizes and awards at worldwide level.
