How to Use SMD Tool to Design and Simulate Metalenses

Designing a metasurface lens (or metalens) is laborious, as one needs to build it by arranging subwavelength-sized unitcells one by one. Simulating a metalens using the FDTD method poses another challenge as it requires a substantial amount of computing power and time, typically hours or days depending on lens size. SMD Tool overcomes these challenges by automating the design process and providing simulation results in a matter of seconds or minutes. The software consists of three modules: Target Phase Generator (module 1), Unitcell Arranger (module 2), and Lens Simulator (module 3).

In this webinar hosted by the NonImaging Optical Design Technical Group, Minsu Oh will first introduce the fundamental wave optics principle of focusing light. After that, he will walk through a step-by-step tutorial of how to use SMD Tool.

About the Presenter: Minsu Oh from Simple Metalens

Living by the motto “never stop learning” and driven by his academic curiosity, Dr. Minsu Oh is a multi-disciplinary engineer with a background in materials science, optical engineering, and electrical engineering. For his PhD work at Tufts University, Minsu conducted research on light-matter interactions, from thin film interference to metamaterials. While working on metasurface lenses, also known as metalenses, he noticed that a big challenge of the research was the amount of labor needed to process the large dataset. He wanted to make it easier for other engineers to design metalenses. After completing his PhD, Minsu continued to explore the subject and developed SMD Tool, a free software that automates the laborious design process for building a metalens.
