As the earth's population grows, so does the energy demand. At the current state, the consumption of fossil fuels is the main driver of climate change and its catastrophic impacts on our livelihood. The need for green and efficient energy production is felt in every sector of the energy chain. In this webinar hosted by the Optics for Energy Technical Group, we learn about the enabling role of optical metrology on thin-film industry, leading to higher throughput and quality of solar cell, LED and transistor production, to name a few.

LEDs, which are one of the most efficient light production devices, consist of tens of thin-film layers with thicknesses on the nanometer scale. The accuracy of their fabrication process, from temperature to wafer curvature to individual layer thickness determines the power conversion efficiency and emission wavelength. These features can be monitored in-situ using non-destructive reflectometry, refractometry, pyrometry and photoluminescence. We will learn about these techniques in this webinar and see practical examples on how metrology can improve production yield and even facilitate error correction in fabrication.

What You Will Learn:
• Basic principles of LEDs and solar cells
• Reflectometry, deflectometry and pyrometry: Fabry-Perot oscillations, wafer bowing and temperature monitoring
• Case studies: CIGS and perovskite solar cells, Epitaxy monitoring for LEDs and transistors

Who Should Attend:
• Anybody who is interested in light-matter interaction
• Students, researchers and industrial experts in thin-film production

About the Presenter:  Nasim Rezaei from LayTec AG

Dr. Nasim Rezaei received her master’s degree in electrical engineering from Shiraz University, Iran in 2011. In 2020, she received her PhD degree from the PVMD group of Delft University of Technology on the subject of "Opto-electrical modelling of CIGS solar cells". After that, she completed a post-doctoral project at the same group until 2021. She joined University of Twente in 2021 for a post-doctoral project on the modelling of piezoelectric micro-robots, powered by solar cells. Since 2023, Dr. Nasim Rezaei has joined LayTec AG as a material modelling scientist.
